In Day 2, we touched on the theme of “possibilities”, asking ourselves what we’d do if we could do anything, without restrictions. Now, let’s play with that theme some more.
Sometimes our day-to-day life doesn’t lend itself very well to daydreaming and thinking about something different we’d like to try. And yet, some of the things that get us excited and energized could be just under the surface of that day-to-day.
Your hobbies, the type of entertainment you enjoy, the “extra-curricular” activities you’re involved with – all of these can provide great clues as to where your greatest interests lie. And even the things we’ve made a mental note to do someday, they can provide clues as well.
Try these two exercises
#1: Answer 3 questions about what interests you
Answer these questions to help you think about the things that tend to pique your curiosity and get you energized:
- If you could take today off, and spend it spontaneously doing whatever you desire, what would it be?
- What new career direction would like to explore?
- What hobby, sport, or activity have you been meaning to try?
#2: Complete these sentences related to past interests
Think about an old interest you pursued, or something you tried doing or learned to do sometime in the past. As you remember your experiences around that interest, how would you fill in the blanks in the following sentence?
Once I tried , it made me more , and that helped me to .
Reflect
- What did you notice about yourself and your interests from doing these exercises?
- Did you resurface any forgotten or hidden interests that you’d like to pursue?
- What awareness about about how your interests have benefitted you in the past can you translate into doing the work that you want to do?
