Welcome to the 7th and final day in this series about discovering the work you love! If you’re reading this, it’s clear that you’re eager to do work that you love. You’ve probably had enough of jobs that don’t energize you, or work situations that don’t fit who you are.
But, how do you go about actually getting to do the work that you love? The first step is to get more clear about what that work is. And how do you do that? You’ve already started doing it.
It starts with being more aware
If you’ve gone through the exercises of the past 6 days, it means you’ve given good thought and attention to:
- what motivates you in work
- what’s important to you
- your special gifts to give to the world
- what’s possible
- your hidden interests
- what inspires you
- the things that contribute to your happiness
- the things you LOVE and HATE in a job
- your perceptions about your current situation
OK, great! So, now that you’re more aware about these things, what’s next for you? More importantly… What’s keeping you from taking action?
What’s in the way?
Step 1: Identify your fear
Write down your greatest fear about discovering the work you would love to do?
Is your fear similar to one of these?
- I haven’t yet figured out what the work I love is exactly
- If I don’t yet know what that work is , I may never know
- I don’t know where to start in terms of “next steps”
- Doing what I love means changing, and change is difficult
Step 2: Consider your best / worst / likely outcomes?
Next, explore what could happen in different situations involving your fear.
Complete the following 3 statements:
- If I can work past my fear, the best possible outcome is .
- If I don’t work past my fear, the worst possible outcome is .
- If I continue to live with my fear, the likely outcome is .
Step 3: Commit to next steps
As the capstone of these 7 days of exercises and reflection, ask yourself these 2 questions:
- To what next steps am I willing to commit, right now, in order to get closer to doing the work I love?
- How will I hold myself accountable for following through on that commitment to myself?
Final words
Congratulations! You did it. You reached the end of this 7-day series about discovering the work you love. My wish for these exercises was that they served as a solid launching-off point for anyone who’s genuinely interested in doing work that they love.
I recognize that for most of us, it takes more than reading a blog series, and doing exercises to effect significant change in our lives. If you’re looking to do work you love, and you’re not doing it now, it’s very likely you need to change something – about your approach, your thought patterns, your behavior. And as this last day’s exercise hints at, change is difficult.
As a coach, I help people with change. I help them get clear and specific about the change they want to see in their work and their lives, and then I support them as they take steps to make those changes. With coaching, they’re can make the changes they want more quickly, and with more joy and well-being than without the help and support that coaching provides.
Are you ready to take that leap from where you are now, onto a path of doing the work you love?
If so, I would love to help you. Contact me for free session to explore how we could work together.
Until next time, I wish you great joy and fulfillment in work and life!
